Commissions

Commissioning a piece of artwork is an experience like no other. It is both creative and personal, allowing you to participate in the artistic process while working with me to create an artwork especially for you that would not have existed without your inspiration.

HOW TO BEGIN

If you are thinking about asking me to paint something for you, the chances are you already like my style and way of working but are imagining it depicting something personal to you. Maybe you’ve realised that while photos are good for freeze-framing a moment, an oil painting keeps that occasion alive and vivid in a way that a snapshot cannot.

So perhaps you want to re-enliven a special time, such as a newborn’s first days or a family celebration. Or perhaps it is a place you have visited and would love to see painted in oils. Or maybe it’s someone that you want to keep in mind with a personal portrait. Or even something imaginary that you would like to see rendered in my style.

Whatever the reason, if you like my style and have a subject in mind, that is the time to pick up the phone.

HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER

First of all, let’s have a conversation. I want to get an idea of what you’d like, but I’ll probably ask lots of questions too, for example;

  • What is the subject?

  • What size would you like it to be?

  • What colour palette do you prefer?

  • Where are you going to hang it?

  • What is your budget?

Don’t worry if you cannot answer all these questions at once – most people can’t – but I will help you arrive at the answers.

THE PROCESS

Once we both have a clear understanding of what you would like, we’ll begin the actual process. Each commission is different, but if it is a portrait or a place I’ll probably work from photos. I’m likely to send you a few initial sketched ideas with a colour swatch to make sure we are still on the same page, but then I will begin on the piece itself. I’ll send you regular photos as I work – it’s very exciting watching a painting develop!

How long it will take depends on the size, but allow 4 weeks from start to finish. The cost also depends partly on the size but also the time involved in the whole process (which can be almost as much for a small piece as a medium sized work). Most commissioned paintings of 50cm x 75cm are around £750 but don’t worry, we will agree the price before I start work.

THE SMALL PRINT

  • I ask for 50% when I start the commission and the balance on completion.

  • I can organise framing (a 50cm x 75cm inch would be about around £100).

  • Most paintings are delivered by courier at a cost of around £25. However if you would like to collect your painting you are most welcome (and if I am in your area I am happy to deliver it).

QUOTES FROM HAPPY CUSTOMERS

Thank you so much Catherine. Daniel lives 3000 miles away, but his portrait catches my eye every day and it seems as though he is in the same room.

We just love it! We’ve hung it in the bedroom where we see it every day. The children are growing so fast, so the painting of them as babies is a joy.
